For nearly a decade now, Bumpin Uglies have been playing their brand of groove-heavy jams – a curiously fun mix of ska, Reggae and good ole’ punk rock – all while putting strong lyrics at the forefront of the music. It’s a formula that quickly took them from local favorites, playing around Annapolis, to a national stage. With a wildly infectious sound, tattoo-worthy lyrics and an itch to take their music to the masses, the band piled into the van years ago and have rarely seen home since. The Bumpin Uglies’ origin story begins with singer/guitarist Brandon Hardesty playing open mics around Maryland. He met bassist Dave Wolf not too long after and Bumpin Uglies was born. With a proper set of wheels and TJ Haslett on drums, they went off to spread their music across the country like modern day Johnny Appleseeds. The group recently added Chad Wright on keyboards, expanding on their sound. CLICK HERE FOR FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE $7 ADV $10 DOS

Conversations Across the Creek is an initiative by the Humanities Research Centre (HRC) and the Research School of Chemistry (RSC) to provide a space for continuing dialogue among scientists, social scientists, and humanities scholars. Meetings are held monthly, with the aim of stimulating and unearthing research and teaching collaborations across the university. Join us for the third Conversation for 2017, where three diverse scholars 'cross' Sullivan's Creek, presenting on their latest research. The topic of this event is MicroCT Applications in Archaeology. Over the last few years, a group of inter-disciplinary researchers has been collaborating on microCT applications in archaeology. Foremost, the technique has been used to infer site formation processes at hominin-bearing sites in South Africa, identify domesticated rice within pottery sherds from early Neolithic sites in Vietnam, visualise extinct megafauna from highland Papua New Guinea, and so on. Currently, research is focussing on building virtual on-line databases for: archaeological parenchyma for key food plants in Island Southeast Asia, New Guinea and northern Australia (in collaboration with UCL); and extinct megafauna in Australia-New Guinea (in collaboration with the Australian Museum). This exciting project makes use of the National CTLab, an open 3D X-ray microscopy facility run by Physics and built from over a decade of fundamental research and industry engagement. Otherwise, it'll mostly be a flat route. All ages welcome.  Attendees will also receive special gifts/promotions from several local shops including dwell New Haven and Wave Gallery! FAQs What are parking options at the event? There is metered parking on the street. You can also park in the York Street garage (50 York Street, New Haven, CT 06511), which is within walking distance of The Study at Yale Hotel. Where will the walk end? You are cordially invited to a reception at the Whitney Humanities Center's Art Galley with New Haven-based artist and architect, Mohamed Hafez. All proceeds will go towards providing Syrian refugee camps with sustainable medical equipment. Refreshments will be served. Please read below for further details!  Mohamad Hafez was born in Damascus, Syria in 1984 and migrated with his family to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia a year after his birth. His early life was informed by his family’s foreign status in Riyadh and regular visits to Damascus, until their eventual return in 1999. Hafez moved to the United States in 2003 to study architecture at Iowa State University. Since 2009, he has established himself as a licensed architect and full-time artist in New Haven, CT. Hafez’s art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects, paint and scrap metal. Using his architectural skills, Hafez creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in their appearance yet politically charged in their content. Responding to the atrocities of the Syrian war, Hafez’s recent work depicts cities besieged by civil war to capture the magnitude of the devastation and to expose the fragility of human life. However, in deliberate contrast to the violence of war, his art imbues a subtle hopefulness through deliberately emphasizing scenes that affirm that even during the darkest of times, patience is necessary for the blossoming of life and that, eventually, justice will prevail. See Hafez's work recently featured in The New York Times!  The United Nations has deemed the civil conflict in Syria one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century. The unrest in Syria has forced nearly 5 million refugees to travel across the borders and has internally displaced more than 6 million persons. Consequently, refugee camps in countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan have seen an influx of impoverished Syrian refugees, many of whom are in need of immediate medical care. Thus, providing access to basic, quality healthcare is of utmost importance in refugee populations.  The Yale chapter of Rotary, in partnership with the New Haven Rotary Club, is raising funds to supply sustainable medical equipment to a refugee camp in Jordan, Camp Zaatari. Partnering with a NGO, Yale Rotaract hopes to deliver such equipment by the Summer of 2018, depending on field necessities.   By supplying the Zaatari with sustainable medical equipment, we will be helping to provide tens of thousands of people access to critical health screenings and treatment for their long-term future.  Please join us for an evening at the Whitney's Humanity Center's Art Gallery for a reception featuring Hafez and his work. All proceeds from ticket sales and silent auction items will be allocated towards funding medical relief for Camp Zaatari. Refreshments will be served. Additional donations can be made on our website.

Kizomba Public Monday could be your first time or your first time in a long time. : ) Mondays in The Great Room at Union Station Hartford 6-8pm; a free, weekly, community event by Kizomba Hartford. We are excited to continue this program in 2017.    It started back on November 11, 2015, when Kizomba Hartford celebrated the the 40th Anniversary of Independence of Angola at the Union Station Great Room. On that day, Kizomba Hartford was awarded a Citation by the Office of the Mayor of the City of Hartford for being Kizomba Ambassadors! Also, 11.11.15 was proclaimed "Angolan Kizomba Day" in the City of Hartford by Mayor Pedro Segarra. In the summer of 2015, Kizomba Hartford hosted its first Mobbinmeetup at the Hartford Riverfront. Dancing Kizomba anywhere is a stimulating experience. Dancing outdoors in the summer breeze by the water was anespecially a fascinating experience because we engaged the public in an art form that they had never seen before.  We followed up in fall with an outdoor Mobbin Meetup at Elizabeth park at Sunrise Outlook. Dancing in the beautiful Great Room is a beautifully similar experience, indoors, while connecting with people new to Kizomba Dance from Angola.    FREE Community Event at the Great Room, Hartford Train Station (UNION STATION). Business Model Innovation  Before updating your strategy, (which you probably need to do if you haven't dug into it in the past year or so) you should revisit your business model.  Working on your business model should be like solving a riddle.  It should be challenging, but engaging and rewarding!  Solving a riddle also taps your logical brain, as well as your creative brain--just like the work of business model innovation!  Whether your business is young and still finding its sweet spot, or whether success is pushing you to scale up and expand into new opportunities, now is the time to innovate!   If you're working to grow the business, add something new, or go in a new direction, your business model is the place to start!   Business Model Innovation starts with a snapshot of how the business currently operates-- from the 10-thousand foot view.  After you capture your Business Model Blueprint, you can do a simple assessment to uncover the areas where the business model could work better.  In this webinar, we'll do some creative thinking exercises to spark ideas about how things could be different in your business.  By the end, you'll have started a practical, easy-to-use process to guide your thinking about how to tap new opportunities.  Stand-out businesses work on their business model.  Leaders who focus on business model routinely get out of the weeds of implementation and look at the business from several perspectives.  Join Jen Reiner, president of Align, for this 60 minute webinar!  The event URL will be emailed to you after registration is complete.

The third International Vampire Film and Arts Festival - also known as VampFest - will take place from June 7th to the 10th 2018 in the stunning ancient citadel of Sighisoara in the heart of Transylvania. Over the past two years we’ve shown around 150 new vampire films; showcased dozens of vampire novels and short stories; held scores of talks from respected researchers of the vampire genre and history as part of the Vampire Academic Conference; gone on loads of fascinating trips to Dracula’s fortresses across the region; held dozens of vampire-themed parties… and given all festival delegates a bloody fangtastic time! 2018 promises to be the best festival yet - dare to join us? From Stoker to Rice; from Nosferatu to classic Hammer onto Twilight, The Strain and beyond; the Vampire genre is the World’s most enduring and influential horror genre straddling film, television, literature, theatre, games and new media.  Vampfest brings together vampire fans and creatives from across the World in one cross-platform event – an intense four-day programme of film screenings, performing art, book readings, product launches, Q&As, seminars, workshops, networking events and lots of parties.  Alongside Vampfest is what we believe to be the largest academic conference in the world specifically focused on the vampire genre: the prestigious Vampire Academic Conference. Our first keynote speaker has already been announced as bestselling author and writer of many Buffy The Vampire Slayer adventures Christopher Golden.     And where else to hold this unique event but in Transylvania - within the walls of the dramatic medieval citadel that was the birthplace to the real Vlad Dracula? We're now also offering tickets which tie in accommodation and transfers from Bucharest but they're limited, so get them soon.   AND DON'T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET SOME TRULY ONCE-IN-A-DEATHTIME REWARDS BY SUPPORTING US ON KICKSTARTER (search for VAMPFEST) - BUT HURRY: OUR CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN WILL END IN MID NOVEMBER 2017!   FAQs   Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? You should be 18 or over to attend the event. ID may be required.   What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event? You can drive to Sighisoara but please be aware that parking in the citadel is limited. There is plenty of parking available just outside the citadel walls.   What can I bring into the event? You can bring anything you feel like (within reason) but don't forget some sunscreen (we don't want any vampires spontaneously combusting in the sunlight) and a costume to vamp things up after dark...   How can I contact the organiser with any questions? Please email [email protected] and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.   What's the refund policy? You can have a full refund up to thirty days before the event. Which hotel will I be staying at? If you have purchased accommodation with your ticket, your room will be in the luxurious Hotel Central Park, just a few minutes stroll from all of the Vampfest venues.  If you haven't purchased accommodation with your ticket, there are a range of accommodation options in the area. Try and choose something inside or close to the citadel. Feel free to contact us and we'll try and help you with any accommodation questions you may have: [email protected] Is breakfast included in the accommodation deal? Yes, breakfast is included in the accommodation deal. If we've booked transfers with our tickets, where will the bus pick us up? You will be contacted with more details about this closer to the event. The current plan is that your guide - the fantastic Manuela - will first of all meet you in Bucharest Old Town at 9am on Thursday June 7th for a short tour of the medieval streets of this historic city, including the fortress where Vlad Dracula once ruled. The bus will then pick you up for the journey to Vampfest. There will be numerous guided stops on the way, including to Snagov Monastery to see the tomb of Vlad Dracula (although Dracula's body is actually missing...), and the stunning Peles Castle in the mountains of Sinaia, where you'll stop for lunch. You will also visit the medieval city of Brasov, one of Dracula's headquarters, before travelling through some amazing countryside and past hilltop castles to Sighisoara and your hotel. Does that mean if I've booked a transfer I should aim to arrive in Bucharest on Wednesday night? Yes, that's right - try to arrive on Wednesday. If your flight arrives early on Thursday morning, we can arrange for the bus to pick you up at the airport. If I haven't booked a transfer, how can I get to Sighisoara and Vampfest? There are lots of ways to get to us from any of the airports in Romania, including buses and trains. You can also hire a car. And of course we can always put you in touch with our transfer providers so you can arrange a private transfer. I want to book a transfer but only one way - how do I do that? Please contact us at [email protected] to discuss your transfer needs and we'll be able to sort something out for you. What's happening at the festival this year? We will announce the programme of events closer to the date. However, there will definitely be lots of new vampire films shown, including talks from directors, producers and actors; fascinating talks from the latest research into vampire fiction and folklore, including a talk from bestselling Buffy author Christopher Golden; opportunities to go on vampire-themed tours of Transylvania; and lots and lots of parties, including the famous Vampire Ball. Special guests so far include Christopher Golden and Bram Stoker's descendent, writer and historian Dacre Stoker, with more to be announced soon. I'm a student and can't afford the ticket prices. If you have student ID you may qualify for a special discounted price. Please contact us for more information at [email protected] I'm a filmmaker and I'm showing my film at the festival/ I'm an author doing a reading at your festival. What advice would you give to make sure there's a full audience there? We will include your film/ story in our programme but it's up to you to drum up an audience. All film screenings and readings are free and open to the public, although our delegates have priority on seats. We suggest you have a marketing plan when you arrive. Your first mission should be to get all of the other delegates to attend and then concentrate on the members of the public. Social media should provide your primary marketing platforms but don't forget some direct physical marketing. Consider bringing an actor; think about some kind of gimmick to attract people - maybe offer everyone a free glass of red wine if they attend (alchohol is relatively cheap in Sighisoara) or get your actor to wear the costume of your vampire to garner interest; get some t-shirts printed promoting your film or book; contact the press beforehand to get some media interest. If you want to produce flyers, please make sure you hand them out responsibly. Sighisoara is a beautiful town - don't spoil it with litter.
